Brand History and Description –
Frederick Maytag, a businessman, founded Maytag Washing Machine Company in 1893. In 1925 the company became Maytag Inc. in 1925. It is among the very few companies that posted a profit in successive years even during the Great Depression of the 1930s.
In 1938, the company’s workers provoked a strike due to a 10 percent pay cut. However, the company was able to overcome this strike because of the intervention of a few military companies. Machine gun company of the 113th Cavalry Regiment, Iowa National Guard was among these military contingents. During Second World War, Fred Maytag II, grandson of Frederick Maytag became the president of this company which went into manufacturing military equipment components.
After the war, the company resumed production of washing machines in 1946. In the same year, they started marketing of refrigerators and cooking ranges in their own name thought the manufacturers were separate. In 1949, Maytag produced their first automatic washing machine. Production of military equipment components was once again initiated during the Korean War (1950-53). However, production of regular items was never hampered in this occasion. The 50s decade witnessed a rapid growth in kitchen appliance and laundry industries, collectively termed ‘white goods’.
