How to operate a dishwasher

Operating a dishwasher is easy. However there are some precautions you must know upfront

  1. Make sure you do not have very fragile glass in the dishwasher as chances of breakage while inserting and removing could be high
  2. Do not use regular dishwashing liquids and powders. This is an easy to make mistake as the labels of regular dishwashing liquids and powders do not clearly state that they cannot be used for dishwashers
  3. While placing spoons and other cooking items like spatulas in the spoon holder, make sure that the inner lower rotating washing jet does not touch the top of the spoons. This is more likely if you put longer cooking spoons and spatulas for a wash
  4. Get the right settings. Incorrect settings will lead to shorter or longer wash times and can either leave your dishes not so clean or consume more than required electricity and water
  5. Remove all food particles before putting your dishes in as these get stuck in the exist valves and can cause problems in the long term
  6. Clean your dishwasher – yes dishwashers also need to be cleaned. You will find deposits of dirt along the sides of the doors and in the hidden corners. Take a soft cloth and clean this every once in a while

The steps to use a dishwasher are

  1. Load the dishwasher with your dirty vessels. Preferably rinse and take off all visible food particles before putting them in
  2. Put the glasses, small bowls and long spoons and spatula in the top shelf
  3. Put the plates, bigger cooking vessels in the lower shelf
  4. Put the spoons, knives, and forks in the spoon holder. Make sure the long spoons and cooking spatulas do not come in the way of the lower rotating water jet
  5. Put adequate quantities of dishwashing powder in the powder dispenser
  6. You can also put dishwasher salt in the salt compartment
  7. And ensure that the rinse aid is topped up (see the dishwasher manual for the location and how to top up the rinse aid)
  8. Set the dishwasher settings to your best estimate

After the dishwasher is done with its cycle wait for some time before you open it Carefully check if all vessels are cleaned as we have a tendency to simply put the dishes away assuming that they are all perfectly cleaned!

Load the lower shelf with bigger vessels and plates

Load the upper shelf with glasses, cups and saucers and smaller bowls

Put the spoons, knives, forks and cooking spatulas in the spoon holder

Put the spoon holder in the lower shelf

Make sure that the rotating water jet does not touch the spoons

7-dish

Locate the correct compartment for the dishwashing powder

8-dish

Use only approved dishwashing powders

Fill the compartment with the powder

10-dish

Select the right settings that suit the load and types of vessels
