Buying an Oven Toaster Grill was an interesting experience.

My older gas oven had gone on the blink so had to be replaced last year. The first decision was whether we actually needed one as we do not bake much – but realised that our kids liked the idea of being able to bake – liked having the option was essential. I also recognised that a grill was an essential in our house for multi cuisine preparations hence the whole thought translated to looking for an OTG – Oven Toaster Grill.

The next step logically was – which one ??

There were a few search criteria that i had unconsciously developed in my mind – first among them was the brand – I needed a brand I had heard of, and that also had multiple products in the same category i.e. home appliances, a brand that I could trust and that had service centre available across India specially in places such as Pune.

Also, it had to be electric not gas oven as I had a few bad experiences with my older gas one. The size was also important – large enough to bake large cakes / grill several items together but not too large for the kitchen top. Finally the price and the aesthetics had to be looked into.

I searched idly online but was not satisfied with the specifications, the descriptions, the visuals etc mentioned by various websites. I also had the view that the decision of purchasing a home appliance that would be used by multiple users namely me, my kids as well as the household help could not be made by shopping online, so I dropped in to the closest Croma dealer. I saw the few models that they had on display, mentally shortlisted a couple but did not want to close it without visiting other outlets mainly because they did not have too many models or offers on the existing ones. Hence there was nothing to push my purchase decision.

I then visited a known retailer in my neighbourhood for his personal opinion on the product and service of the ones shortlisted and zeroed down on a model from Morphy Richards. We bargained on the price and it was home delivered the same day. I chose to buy from him as we knew him very well, had purchased quite a few of our appliances from him and from past experience I knew that if I ran into any problem he would help me reach the service centre or solve the issue with one call.

It all went well and I am happy with my purchase and we use the OTG very regularly. Its very user friendly and easy to clean & maintain – all of which had been promised by our retailer. As a matter of fact, the front glass panel broke last month – I immediately called the retailer and he sent me the service centre number – and the glass was replaced within a couple of days. Proper appointments were taken and the service rep was very polite and knew his work. He also warned me at the time of replacement that the functioning would be a little different as the original glass was factory fitted !

My suggestion if any would be not to rush into a product but do an informed search and consult existing users and / or retailers who have more information on the products as these are slightly technical items which may require repairs and maintenance at any point. Go for products with good service centres even if the price is marginally more.
